Step 1: build a completed Latin square
On 4×4, write a grid where each row and column contains 1–4 once. A simple start: row 1 as 1 2 3 4; row 2 as 2 3 4 1; continue cycling—then swap rows/columns carefully to mix patterns while preserving the Latin property. Verify twice. A broken Latin “solution” poisons every later step.
On 5×5, patience rises. Use pencil and keep a digit checklist per line.
Step 2: add inequalities consistent with neighbors
For some adjacent pairs, write the true comparison given your filled digits. If left is 4 and right is 1, you may place > between them. Do not invent false signs. You do not need a sign on every edge—too many signs can make trivial puzzles; too few can leave multiple solutions.
Start with 30–40% of possible edges on 4×4, then adjust after uniqueness tests. Vertical and horizontal both count.
Step 3: choose givens
Erase some digits to become blanks, leaving others as givens. Early creators leave too many givens (puzzle feels like copying) or too few (ambiguity explodes). Aim for a handful on 4×4 and test.
Givens should cooperate with signs: a given that sits on the large side of an edge teaches extremes naturally.

Hide your solution and try to solve using only givens + signs. Better: ask a friend. Best for learning: systematically check whether another Latin square satisfies the same clues. If you find a second completion, add a sign or a given, or remove a misleading freedom.

Step 5: difficulty feel
