How to solve a 6×6 Mini Killer (step-by-step)

A repeatable walkthrough mindset for ProPuz Easy—not a single frozen puzzle to memorize.

ProPuz Easy Mini Killer uses a 6×6 grid with digits 1–6, 2×3 blocks, and cage sum clues on an empty start. Every generated board differs, so this guide teaches a procedure you can run on any Easy puzzle: inventory cages, force tight sums, propagate through blocks, verify. Pair it with the rules if any term feels fuzzy. Open a live board from the Mini Killer hub and follow along with notes or the on-screen numpad.

Step 0: set the stage

Confirm difficulty (Easy) and grid size (6×6). Notice the six 2×3 blocks—two bands of three blocks each. Scan how many cages exist and whether any labels look extreme (sum 3, sum 11, small three-cell totals). You are not solving yet; you are loading the map. Decide that you will not guess on this board. Six digits and tight cages mean logic should finish the job if you stay organized.

If you use pencil marks, plan to track candidates 1–6 in empty cells. If you prefer mental play, commit to re-scanning row, column, and block after every placement so memory does not invent ghosts.

Step 1: cage inventory and combination menus

List mentally every cage whose sum has a tiny menu. Two cells summing to 3 must be {1, 2}. Two cells summing to 11 must be {5, 6}. Three cells summing to 6 must be {1, 2, 3}. Highlight cages where only one combination exists given size—those are your opening anchors.

Do not place digits yet unless a cage pair is forced by block or column elimination. The goal of Step 1 is awareness. Most Easy mistakes happen because a player never performed this inventory and filled a row that contradicted a corner cage.

Step 2: place forced cage pairs and triples

Ask: where can a forced pair live? A {5, 6} cage might occupy two cells in the same row—reserving 5 and 6 in that row and banning them elsewhere in the line. A {1, 2} cage in a column might leave only one orientation once a 2×3 block forbids 2 in the upper cell. Place digits when only one legal orientation remains, or when a naked single emerges from cage elimination.

Resist filling a “lonely” center cell just because it is empty. Lonely cells often belong to wide cages whose sums are not decided until neighbors land. Patience here saves cascade fixes later.

Step 3: apply 2×3 block and line uniqueness

After each cage-driven placement, scan its row, column, and block: that digit is now banned elsewhere in those units. Look for naked singles—cells whose remaining candidate set has length one. Look for hidden singles—digits that can fit in only one empty cell of a row, column, or block even if that cell still shows other pencil marks.

Mini Killer is not “cages only.” If you catch yourself ignoring blocks because cage math feels louder, pause and run a block scan. Block duplicates fail Check as surely as wrong sums.

Step 4: re-check cage budgets after every fill

Every digit you place consumes part of a cage’s sum and removes that digit from the cage’s allowed set. If a two-cell cage of sum 8 already holds 3, the partner must be 5—{3, 5} is the only pair left that avoids repeats. Update mental menus immediately. A legal Sudoku placement can still break cage arithmetic if you forget the remaining budget.

Propagation alternates between Sudoku units and cages. When both go quiet, you missed a constraint—return to Step 1 on unfinished cages touching empty cells.

Step 5: resolve overlapping constraints

Mid-game cells often sit at the intersection of a row, a block, and two cages. Work the tightest constraint first. If a cell must be even because its cage already used odd digits, intersect that with row needs {2, 4, 6}. When two lines both need the same resolution, pick the line with the smaller candidate list.

Cages that span block boundaries are feature, not bug—they link regions. A digit forced outside a block may determine which digits stay inside the cage’s other cells, shrinking the whole board.

Step 6: endgame hygiene and Check

Before you celebrate, perform a closing audit: each row contains 1–6 once; each column contains 1–6 once; each 2×3 block contains 1–6 once; every cage sums correctly with no internal repeats. Only then press Check on ProPuz. If Check fails, fix from the error’s neighborhood outward rather than clearing the whole board in frustration.

Note elapsed time only as curiosity. The win condition for learning is a clean explanation of your first five placements—why that cage pair, why that block single—not a personal best.

Illustrative mini-story

Imagine a corner two-cell cage labeled 3—digits 1 and 2. The top cell sits in block A; the bottom in block D. Column 1 already hosts a cage elsewhere that forbids 2 in the top half. The top cell must be 1, the bottom 2. Row 1 now needs {3, 4, 5, 6} in four cells with two cages sharing sums that force 5 and 6 together. Block A collapses; column 3 picks up a hidden single. Three fills later the grid is half done. Your Easy board will rhyme even when the digits differ.

If your board does not collapse, you are not “bad at Mini Killer”—you skipped a cage menu or a block leftover. Return to Step 1.

When to level up

Graduate to Medium when you can finish several Easy puzzles without Check-driven thrashing and can narrate cage reasons for early placements. Until then, repeat Easy with variety via daily challenges or Generate in the play sidebar.

Hard and Expert add longer cages and deeper combination chains—the same six steps apply; the menus just grow. Accuracy first; speed follows.

Checklist you can reuse

Inventory cages → force tight sums → block and line singles → update cage budgets → resolve overlaps → full audit → Check. Tape that sequence near your monitor for a week. Habit beats inspiration.
